Friday Talks: The Struggle for Freedom in the Caucasus and Şeyh Şamil
This week, as part of our Friday Talks series, we held an insightful and in-depth discussion with Assoc. Prof. Dr. Hacı Murat Arabacı, a faculty member at the Gendarmerie and Coast Guard Academy, on the topic “The Struggle for Freedom in the Caucasus and Şeyh Şamil.”
During the session, the historical and strategic significance of the Caucasus was examined, alongside comprehensive evaluations of the Turkish presence in the region, the states established there, and their political, cultural, and military structures. In this context, the resistance led by Imam Shamil against Russian expansionism in the 19th century was discussed not merely as a military struggle, but as a multidimensional movement shaped by faith, identity, and the pursuit of independence. Furthermore, the historical roles of Turkic communities in the Caucasus, their relations within regional power dynamics, and their lasting influence up to the present day were also addressed.
Through interactive discussions with participants, it was emphasised that the struggle for freedom in the Caucasus is not only a matter of the past but also a legacy that continues to shape today’s geopolitical realities and cultural identity debates. We would like to thank all participants for their interest and contributions and extend our sincere appreciation to Hacı Murat Arabacı for enriching the session with his valuable insights.
