Trainings for Mine Managers Continue
As part of the Increasing Safety and Security through Labour-Management Partnership Project, implemented by the Academicians Union Association, mine managers once again took their seats—this time in the classroom.
Within the scope of the EU and Republic of Türkiye-funded programme implemented by the Ministry of Labour and Social Security, a seminar titled “Training for Managers” was held under the Increasing Safety and Security through Labour-Management Partnership Project. The event took place at Zonguldak Bülent Ecevit University, hosted by Zonguldak Vocational School.
IMPORTANCE OF DECENT WORK
The seminar began with an opening speech delivered by M-OHS** Project Coordinator Aydın Alperen EROL. Erol emphasized that the aim of the project and the seminar is “to raise awareness on the importance, scope, and legal dimension of decent work in Occupational Health and Safety (OHS), and to strengthen labour-management cooperation for the effective implementation of OHS policies.”
CRITICAL ASPECTS OF MANAGERIAL AWARENESS DISCUSSED
During the training targeting mining sector managers in Zonguldak, Prof. Dr. Kemal BARIŞ, a distinguished expert in the field, discussed recent policy changes in the mining industry, risk avoidance, the importance of ventilation, and critical aspects of managerial awareness.
Stating that managers must be aware of all policy developments, Prof. Barış noted: “To approach perfection, managers must quickly obtain up-to-date information related to their field and begin working on it immediately.”
UNDERSTANDING RISK AVOIDANCE
Highlighting risk avoidance, Prof. Barış explained:
“Some American companies choose not to invest in certain countries—not because profit margins are low, but because the risk of expropriation is high. The solution is not to operate where the risk exists. This can be considered from the perspective of both workers and mine managers. If a worker applies risk avoidance for a job where the probability of fatality is higher, choosing not to take that job could be logical. Likewise, if the death of a worker would cause irreparable consequences for a mining company, not opening a mine could be rational. Of course, nothing is this absolute, but risk avoidance should be applied gradually, and its logic must be well-understood.”
AWARENESS MEASURED THROUGH TESTS
The seminar continued interactively, led by Prof. Dr. Kemal BARIŞ. Significant improvement in participants’ awareness levels and satisfaction was observed through pre- and post-training tests.
21 MINE MANAGERS ACTIVELY PARTICIPATED
A total of 21 mine managers from Zonguldak attended the event. Many participants contributed to the seminar with questions and suggestions during the presentation.
