Representatives from public, private, and non-profit organizations operating in Türkiye’s mining sector convened in Ankara to discuss and brainstorm key issues and factors affecting occupational health and safety (OHS) in mining.
The General Stakeholder Meeting of the project titled “Enhancing Safety and Security Through Labour-Management Partnership”, supported under the Occupational Health and Safety Improvement Programme jointly financed by the European Union and the Republic of Türkiye and implemented by the Ministry of Labour and Social Security, was hosted by the Academicians Union Association, the project coordinator. Participants included representatives from Gazi University, Türk Enerji-Sen, Karabük University, and various other institutions.
In his opening speech, Prof. Dr. İsmail Şahin, President of the Academicians Union Association, emphasized that the aim of the project is “to raise awareness about the importance, content, and legal aspects of decent work in the context of OHS, and to strengthen labour-management cooperation for effective implementation of OHS policies.”
Following this, Dr. Tayfun Fındık, Project Coordinator of the Academicians Union Association, stated that the association has been contributing academically to occupational health and safety for nearly 15 years and, through this project, aims to establish a collaborative model to improve safety in the mining sector. He noted that the project includes trainings intended to increase awareness among both workers and managers. Dr. Fındık also highlighted that all findings will be discussed in workshops and workshop reports will be shared with all stakeholders.
